Patient-Focused Treatments

At Gastro Health Scotland, we believe in taking a conservative approach whenever possible. Many gastrointestinal and general surgical conditions can be effectively managed without surgery, and non-operative treatment is always considered first.

When surgery is necessary, Mr. Michael Wilson uses advanced, minimally invasive (keyhole) techniques that are associated with faster recovery, reduced pain, and lower risk of complications.

For patients with additional medical conditions who may not be suitable for general anaesthesia, Mr. Wilson is able to offer selected procedures under local anaesthetic where appropriate, making treatment accessible to those who might otherwise face limited options.

Comprehensive diagnosis

Getting an accurate diagnosis is the first and most important step

During your consultation, Mr. Wilson will take time to listen carefully to your symptoms and medical history, followed by a detailed clinical examination. If further imaging is needed, such as ultrasound, CT, MRI, or endoscopy, this will be arranged promptly to ensure a thorough understanding of your condition and the best possible treatment plan.

Nausea or vomiting

Treatment options

Dietary and lifestyle advice for mild cases

Hernias

Hernias occur when tissue or organs push through a weakness in the abdominal wall, they are often seen in the groin or abdominal area. They can also occur through a previous surgical scar.

Common types of hernias we treat

Inguinal (groin) hernias
Umbilical hernias
Incisional hernias
Hiatus hernias (see reflux section)

Symptoms

A palpable lump or bulge, especially when straining or coughing
Discomfort or pain in the area around the hernia
Heartburn, indigestion or reflux if related to a hiatus hernia

Treatment options

Watchful waiting for small, asymptomatic hernias
Open or laparoscopic hernia repair surgery
Mesh or suture repair depending on the location of the hernia and the patient’s needs
Most surgeries are performed as a day-case procedures

Hiatus hernia, Heartburn and Acid Reflux

Acid Reflux or Gastro-Oesophageal Reflux Disease – GORD, occurs when stomach acid flows back into the oesophagus, causing symptoms like heartburn, chest discomfort, and regurgitation.

Symptoms

Heartburn and indigestion, especially after eating
Sour taste or regurgitation
Chronic cough or sore throat
Hoarseness or difficulty swallowing

Diagnostic and treatment options

Lifestyle and dietary advice
Medication to reduce acid production (e.g., PPIs)
Gastroscopy to examine the oesophagus and stomach lining
Laparoscopic anti-reflux surgery (e.g., Nissen fundoplication) for severe or medication-resistant cases

Swallowing Disorders

Swallowing difficulties or Dysphagia can arise from a range of causes, including muscle disorders, strictures, or neurological issues.

Symptoms

Feeling of food sticking in the throat or chest
Pain or discomfort when swallowing
Frequent choking or coughing during meals
Unintentional weight loss

Diagnostic and treatment options

Swallowing assessment and gastroscopy
Oesophageal manometry to assess muscle function
Barium swallow studies
Dilation procedures to widen narrowed areas
Referral for speech and language therapy when appropriate
Surgical correction in selected cases
